It is extraordinary to think that in 1921, Picasso painted Trois femmes \u00e0 la Fontaine <\/em>and Trois Musiciens<\/em>; both canvases are held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The former is the paragon of the \u201cReturn to Order\u201d; after the devastation of the War, Picasso excelled in this Arcadian Neoclassicism steeped in Mediterranean light. The latter is, one might say, the synthesis of Synthetic Cubism, which originated in 1907 and developed out of the initial phase of Analytical Cubism. Nature morte<\/em> dates from this exceptionally rich year, in which Picasso devised a style of full-bodied forms with mythological inflections while continuing to explore\u2014without ever exhausting it\u2014the possibilities of Cubism.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhile the central form of Nature morte<\/em> may evoke a glass or a pitcher\u2014both recurring structural elements in Cubist still lifes\u2014the surrounding background is a juxtaposition of textures and materials rendered in trompe-l\u2019\u0153il<\/em> that function as self-referential quotations. The grey sfumato recalls the color of the newspapers so often employed, while the faux-wood panels on either side of the composition similarly refer to the cut papers that appear from the earliest Cubist still lifes onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFormerly in the collection of Andr\u00e9 Level\u2014French businessman and collector, notable for assembling the first collective fund dedicated to modern French art\u2014the work later entered the collection of Andr\u00e9 Lefebvre. In 1962, this banker donated major works from his collection to the French national museums, including works by L\u00e9ger, Braque, Juan Gris, and Picasso, among them a painting from the Cubist period, Our Future Is in the Air<\/em>, now held at the Centre Pompidou.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIl est extraordinaire de penser qu\u2019en 1921, Picasso peint Trois femmes \u00e0 la Fontaine <\/em>et Trois Musiciens <\/em>; les deux toiles sont conserv\u00e9es au MoMA. Nature morte<\/em> date de cette ann\u00e9e tr\u00e8s riche o\u00f9 Picasso invente un style aux formes pleines et aux accents mythologiques tout en continuant \u00e0 explorer sans jamais l\u2019\u00e9puiser le Cubisme.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTandis que la forme centrale de Nature morte<\/em> n\u2019est pas sans \u00e9voquer un verre ou un pichet qui sont l\u2019un ou l\u2019autre des \u00e9l\u00e9ments structurants et r\u00e9currents des natures mortes cubistes, l\u2019arri\u00e8re-plan alentours est une juxtaposition de textures et de mati\u00e8res en trompe-l\u2019\u0153il qui jouent comme des autocitations. Si le sfumato<\/em> gris a la couleur des journaux force employ\u00e9s, le faux bois de part et d\u2019autre de la composition fait de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux papiers d\u00e9coup\u00e9s qui peuplent d\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res natures mortes cubistes.<\/p>\n\n\n\nProvenant de la collection Andr\u00e9 Level, homme d\u2019affaires et collectionneur fran\u00e7ais qui s\u2019illustra en constituant la premi\u00e8re collection d\u2019art moderne fran\u00e7ais en fonds collectif, l\u2019\u0153uvre passa ensuite dans la collection d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Lefebvre. En 1962, ce banquier fit don aux mus\u00e9es nationaux d\u2019\u0153uvres majeures de sa collection, parmi lesquelles des \u0153uvres de L\u00e9ger, Braque, Juan Gris, Picasso dont une toile de la p\u00e9riode cubiste, Notre Avenir est dans l\u2019air<\/em>, aujourd\u2019hui conserv\u00e9e au Centre Pompidou.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
